About the retreat theme from Pr. Meggan: Shortly after taking the call to Trinity Lutheran in Southwest Idaho, I grieved when I realized the people in my congregation did not feel that they had a grace-filled faith story to tell other people. Here is a group of people who is collectively walking the talk of Christian discipleship. We are living out the Gospel of Jesus Christ through feeding and housing ministries. We strive to practice authentic hospitality, and our worship reflects both tradition and communal creativity. But most members felt ill-equipped to talk about the congregation and their faith. This, even though the priesthood of all believers can be traced back to Martin Luther’s writings. So, we started creating spaces where we practiced talking about our congregation and our lives of faith.

It is this work that I will bring to the 2023 Women’s Retreat at Flathead Lutheran Bible Camp. Specifically, we will undertake the practice of story-linking, originated by Anne Streaty Wimberly, with the goal of being able to speak more confidently about our own lived Christian faith. We will engage memoirs of the Mountain West, the Biblical narrative, faith stories from the American Christian tradition, and finally our own decision making. Through it all we will tell and listen to one another’s stories—stories of childhood, stories of faith, stories of mentors, milestone stories, stories of hardship, and stories of joy.
